Dr. Caixia Gao, the member of remote sensing study team, has taken part in the European Geosciences Union General Assembly hold in Vienna, Austria on 22 - 27 April, 2012, and has published a paper titled “A neural network method for land surface temperature retrieval from AMSR-E passive microwave data over the Tibetan Plateau”, and demonstrated their new achievements in the land surface temperature retrieval from passive microwave data to international peers. Through academic exchanges, the latest progress and developments in land surface temperature retrieval are investigated, which is of great significance to enhance the research capabilities of the remote sensing research group in the surface temperature retrieval.

The EGU General Assembly 2012 brought together geoscientists from all over the world into one meeting covering various disciplines of the Earth, Planetary and Space Sciences. It was a great success with 4,436 oral and 9,092 poster presentations in 530 unique scientific sessions together with 157 Poster Summaries & Discussions sessions as well as 165 side events. About 11,300 scientists from 95 countries participated the conference and demonstrated the latest progress and developments in geosciences. This international conference provided scientists, especially the young scientists with a forum to present their work and discuss their ideas with experts in all fields of geosciences.

Seminar of Ecologists on May 3rd 2012 //www.rentthetour.com/index.php/en/res/aca/5142-2581 //www.rentthetour.com/index.php/en/res/aca/5142-2581

On May 3, 2012, Dr. Paul Kardol from Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and Dr. Shiqiang Wan from HeNan University, visited the CREGraduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. Dr. Shiqiang Wan gave a presentation entitled "Climate Change and Temperate Steppe: Perspectives of Manipulative Experiments" and then Dr. Paul Kardol gave a presentation entitled "Linkages between plant and soil communities: ecosystem dynamics under changing environmental conditions".

Dr. Niu Hai-Shan hosted the presentation. Many famous researchers in China took part in this presentation including Prof. Wang Yan-Fen, Cui Xiao-Yong, and Hao Yan-Bin from college of life science, and Prof. Wang Shi-Ping from the institute of Tibetan Plateau, CAS.

Challenging Process for Sustainable Phosphorus Management //www.rentthetour.com/index.php/en/res/aca/5143-2582 //www.rentthetour.com/index.php/en/res/aca/5143-2582

As the Advisor of Global Traps Project (2010-2015), Prof. Zhengyi Hu (CRE, GUCAS) was invited by Dr. Amit Roy, ECO, IFDC (International Fertilizer Development Centre), USA, Prof. Roland W. Scholz,, and Mr. Kerry S. McNamara, Advisor to the Chairman & ECO, OCP S. A., to take part in the Global Traps Workshop IV “Defining Case Studies – Setting Priorities” in EJ-Jadida, Morocco on March 16-18th, 2012.
This workshop was an important milestone for the Global TraPs Project. Workshop participants visited one of the world’s largest phosphate rock mines and a state of art fertilizer production site on March 16th. Participants interacted with representatives of the Group OCP, Aglobal leader in phosphate fertilizer and phosphoric acid production. Dr. Terrab (CEO of Groupe OCP) presented an evening lecture on March 17th.    The 4th Workshop completed the first phase of the Global TraPs Project, which includes the definition of knowledge gaps. One major part of the conference was to discuss a semi-final draft of the Springer Book“Sustainable Phosphorus Management: a Transdisciplinary Roadmap” (edited by R. Scholz, A. Roy et al.). The second major task of the workshop was to define Global TraPs Case Studies. These case studies will be initiated to provide answers to the most important knowledge gaps.
Prof. Zhengyi Hu contributed some good idea for case study. The project leader and the management board thought that running a case study of the Global TraPs Project in China would be absolutely important! The project management board suggests that China host the first Global TraPs World Conference.

Dr. CUI's Visiting Research on Soil Science //www.rentthetour.com/index.php/en/res/aca/5144-2583 //www.rentthetour.com/index.php/en/res/aca/5144-2583
Dr. Cui Yanshan, associate professor of CRE, has finished his visiting research in Soil Quality Department, Wageningen University in the Netherlands since February, 2011 through February, 2012. During this one-year visit, Dr. Cui worked with Prof. Willem Van Riemsdijk and Dr. Weng Liping in the group of soil chemistry and chemical soil quality for the analysis of heavy metals and iron in the soil samples collected both from China and from Netherlands. They also performed much modeling work basing on the acquired data and obtained very interesting results. Dr. Cui plans to collaborate with the group of soil chemistry and chemical soil quality in the future. His research was supported by the Stated Scholarship Fund. Also, he believes such collaborations will significantly enhance the research levels and expand the experiences of the faculty in CRE.

2011 International Conference on Groundwater Contamination and Water System Security //www.rentthetour.com/index.php/en/res/aca/5145-2584 //www.rentthetour.com/index.php/en/res/aca/5145-2584

The 2011 International Conference on Groundwater Contamination and Water System Security, hosted by Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences,  was held from December 1st through 2nd , 2011, in Beijing,China. Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), U.S. EPA, and Chinese Geological Survey (CGS) co-sponsored the international conference, in order to further advance the study of groundwater contamination and related water system security, and promote international academic exchanges and research collaboration. More than 300 well-known experts and scholars as well as young graduate students participated in this conference. The conference focused on several important and commonly interesting topics such as the latest advances on theories and methods in groundwater contamination investigation and risk assessment, and groundwater contamination control and remediation technologies. The specific objectives of the conference were to facilitate the developments and applications of the key technologies, and enhance effective control and optimal management on groundwater contamination and related water quality security at watershed scales. Importantly, a solid platform for international collaboration on groundwater contamination and pertinent water system security was expected to establish.
