Professor Svenning of Arhus University, Denmark, visited Sino-Danish Center and gave a talk entitled “Ecoinformatics and the ecology of global change” at the First Conference Room in the morning on June 1, 2012. Professor HU Zhengyi, the Vice Dean of College of Resources and Environment, delivered the welcome speech. Professor Cui Xiaoyong, JIANG Xiaoguang, ZHENG Jianzhong, SONG Xianfeng, Associate Professor QIN Chengzhi, ZHANG Na, RUI Xiaoping and TANG Jiakui, and about 50 graduate students, were present on the workshop.

On the afternoon, a seminar on the co-teaching course of “Geospatial Ecology and Environmental Geography” was also held. Dr. ZHANG Na and NIU Haishan gave their insights on grassland ecology including spatial analysis and scale issues, dynamic simulation of grasshopper meta-population, modeling regional carbon and water cycling processes and water use strategies of plants in steppe, Inner Mongolia, respectively. Dr. LI Runkui gave a speech titled “Effects of spatial aggregation of soil spatial information on watershed”. After that, all participants fully discussed how to use these case studies to co-conduct the laboratory excises and project works for the graduate students studying Sino-Danish Center in the school year of 2012-2013, and reached a consensus.

Today is May 18, the tug-of-war of GUCAS in the 2011-2012 academic year is held on the basketball court at the 12:30pm in this sunny day. This competition is composed of eight teams, such as College of Resources and Environment, Faculty of Mathematics, College of Earth Sciences.

This competition is taking the single games to eliminate format. Every team is made up of ten boys and six girls. Our college is the best team that many people have valued. And we do not let them down. Our first opponent is the team of College of Earth Sciences. We beat the opponent easily. We also beat the College of Life Science. And it is quite natural that we enter the final. The final is our college and Faculty of Mathematics. The final is wonderful. But because of our endeavor, we win the competition finally.

On May 3, 2012, Dr. Paul Kardol from Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and Dr. Shiqiang Wan from HeNan University, visited the CREGraduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. Dr. Shiqiang Wan gave a presentation entitled "Climate Change and Temperate Steppe: Perspectives of Manipulative Experiments" and then Dr. Paul Kardol gave a presentation entitled "Linkages between plant and soil communities: ecosystem dynamics under changing environmental conditions".

Dr. Niu Hai-Shan hosted the presentation. Many famous researchers in China took part in this presentation including Prof. Wang Yan-Fen, Cui Xiao-Yong, and Hao Yan-Bin from college of life science, and Prof. Wang Shi-Ping from the institute of Tibetan Plateau, CAS.

On April 22nd, 2012, an instruction seminar for the "Grand Challenges Explorations" (GCE) was held  for the first time in Yuquan Campus of GUCAS. GCE is a program supported by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (Gates Foundation). A series of such GCE projects have been granted  since 2008. According to the official website of Gates Foundation, GCE grants have already been awarded to 602 researchers from 44 countries.

This lectures takes "One inspiration, for $100000, Two pages, Gates helps you to change the world" as the slogan to attract more students to participate. Actually, The initiative uses an agile, accelerated grant-making process with short two-page applications and no preliminary data required. Applications are submitted online, and winning grants are chosen approximately 4 months from the submission deadline.

The seminar was hosted by CRE, and started by the welcome of Dr. ZHANG YuanXun, the Executive Dean of CRE. The instruction was divided into three parts: the GCE and the Gates foundation, the GCE collection themes and application process, as well as the question and answer session. This year's GCE first looks for innovative communication concepts, including "tell the world: aid force", "to explore new ways of antimalarial compounds", "to protect the crops from the biological stress", "the crowd immunization system design optimization new method", and "explore solutions to global health key areas of the new scheme", a total of five subjects. At present, the official website of GCE has begun to accept the 5 themes of online application, and the deadline for Beijing is early morning of May 12th, 2012.

During the end section of the seminar, He Yang and some other students asked different questions actively. Then Dr. Zhang YuanXun summarized and expressed his ardent anticipation that students should devote to innovate scientific explorations.

In 2012, Gates Foundation will have totally ten GCE instruction seminars all over China in selected ten famous universities, and the seminar in GUCAS is the 9th one.

“We found the students of GUCAS are all have logical and realistic thinking, showing special rigorous scholarship that I have never seen”, said by ZHANG Jing, a senior program officer of Gates Foundation in the Beijing Representative Office.

BEIJING -- On March 28th, at 6:00 pm, an English Debate Competition organized by College of Resource and Environment (CRE) of GUCAS opened its veil at the Teaching Building of Yuquan campus. Professor LIU Bin and Professor MENG Yanhong of Department of Foreign languages were invited as the honored guests and judges, Miss WANG Cuicui and members of the Students’ Union of CRE also took part in the competition.SUN Fengyun, Chairwoman of Students’ Union, presided over the competition.

   The debate consisted of two sections, and each was divided into three stages: argument, free debate and closing. Free debate is the hottest part among all of the three from the beginning to the end. Debater’s quick thinking, fluent expression and sagacious view had got the unanimous approval and favorable comment from the judges. At the end of the competition, two judges gave profound and subtle comments and pointed out the problems.

   The competition not only improved the students’ capabilities of logical thinking and oral expression, but also created a good atmosphere for foreign language learning. Meanwhile, the competition promoted understanding and friendship as well as common development in oral English.

On March 2nd, CRE Ph.D. students switched from on-site social survey to the summarizing stage, as scheduled previously according to the course requirements of Chinese Marxist and the Present Age. A symposium was held at room 604 in the teaching building. Participants were the students from Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute who selected the course.

A large numbers of realistic topics were discussed, for example, either educational and employment issues can be associated with the real-world lives. Some attractive surveys reported are: survey on the employment status of graduates from rural places, survey on the effects of cell phone on teenagers, attitude of the public to the National Matriculation TEST, etc. Most of the students can analyze their investigations objectively, and suggested lots of solutions as well.

Finally, reasonable comments on the content and style of the reports were given by the instructors and the judges. They suggested some report style and gave several valuable advices. Students also discussed with each other and share their particular viewpoints.

After two weeks competition, CRE basketball final, organized by the Department of Sports, was began at the plastic basketball court on March 30th, 2012. The two finalist teams are Ecology Center team, and the joint team consists of students from three CAS institutes: Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, Institute of Remote Sensing Applications, and Northeast Institute of Geography and Agroecology. After 48 minutes of exciting competition, Ecology Center team won the champion.

The blustery day did not delay the athletes’ pace and the game started on time. The joint team won the first half by a lopsided score of 22:14, due to the opponent’s continuous mistakes and impressive pitching. With the adjustments of tactics and staffing, the match was getting hotter at the beginning of the second half. Both sides fought hard and the referee whistled without a breathing space. Ecology Center team played aggressively and forced the opponents make mistakes with tough defense and then seized the opportunity to counter. While the joint team played a loose game and there are lots of loopholes on organization and defense. At the end of section three, Ecology Center team took the lead midway. Although the joint team did their best to catch up in the last section, Ecology Center team maintained their leading superiority and stamped out several counterattack. Finally, Ecology Center team won the champion.

In the basketball league, all players tenaciously strive to succeed and never give up; referees are cautious and conscientious; audiences cheer and support the games with their strength. All of those show the CRE students’ presence well.

Class 806 of CRE ceremoniously held a specialty exchanging meeting at room 306 of multifunctional building at 6 pm on February 20. Students brought out their specialty to share with others and talked about the new things in their winter vacation.

At the beginning of the exchanging meeting, SUN Fengyun, the class monitor, introduced a new staff, Ms. WANG Cuicui who will supervise the class. Ms. WANG firstly gave the best wishes to all the students and encouraged them to make progress. Then, she reminded the student to pay more attention to security and psychological health in the new semester, and encouraged students to do more exercises and make more social communications with each other.

After the talk of Ms. WANG, students introduced and shared their specialty one by one. In a moment, there were many specialties on the table all over China including filberts and pine nuts from Jilin province, crisp garden stuff from Shandong province, grilled fish from Dandong in Liaoning province, cumquats from Guangxi province, apples from Gansu province, cheese from Inner Mongolia and Tamarind Pulp from Yunnan province. These specialties were in different shapes and tastes. Some of them were bought from supermarket, some were made by hands. Students tasted happily and most of them said “it is a real treat!”. After the introduction of specialties, students carried on a singing competition accompanied by the delicious specialties tasting.

The whole meeting was in a lively atmosphere with laughter and singing. At the same time, the meeting gave an opportunity for students to show themselves. Students not only had understood the customs, but enhanced the friendship between each other. They are all looking forward to more informative and interesting class activities!

On March 12th, CRE spring basketball was began in Yuquan Campus. The match comprising 8 teams attracted students’ enthusiastic attention. Before the beginning, there are many students gathered around the court. This was the first round and four teams were divided into two groups.

The tempo of the game was normal between A1 team and A2 team. They all emphasized the stable passing and pitching. All players devoted all their energies and GUO Qiandong from A1 team was attractive because of his accurately rebounds.

Compared to A1 to A2 team, A3 to A4 team played at a high tempo. After the first half, the score was 10:2, A4 team was leading. During the second half, A3 team adjusted the tectonics, enhanced the defense and improved the success rate. The score was gradually close and A3 team took the lead midway.

Finally, A2 team and A3 team won the games. The players demonstrated the spirit of solidarity and hard struggle and high-spirited mental outlook of CRE graduates.

The theatrical show of College of Resources and Environment was performed passionately in the Auditorium of UCAS (University of Chinese Academy of Science) located at Yu Quan Road on December 23rd .Zhang Hongxun, the executive president of College of Resources and Environment, Hu Zhengyi, Secretary of CPC Branch of College of Resources and Environment, Wang Mingyu, vice-president of College of Resources and Environment etc and the other leaders of GUCAS watched the shows together with of all students of College of Resources and Environment.During the last three hours, all the players showed the spirit of youth and expressed the expectation of the coming year and gave the best wishes through variety of ways belong to themselves. We will chase our dreams at the place where the dreams take off.
